Yes, But what does it all mean Bazel?

Ok, if I’m not mistaken, our Babel for COM375 blog has definitly steered away from talking about Babel. It is now a blog specifically designed to open up discussion on what is currently doing on in the course, which opens up the question, Why is it still called Babel for COM375? Who knows. It might be just because its easier to keep the title then to change it, either way, its not really about Babel anymore. Recently there have been posts about peoples problems and incite on gathering sources for the Analytical Bibliography assignment. The posts have more or less bacome a log of our progress through the course. In the beginning of the course, most students were not sure what was going on. As Keithjagger writes, “ I can honestly say that after watching Babel in class I have no clear explanation of what is has to do with the subject matter of this class.” They are more than that though as Ciaobelllla writes, “As writers we want our message made clear.” And with practice through the Wiki I believe that to be attainable.

I can honestly say I have no idea why Steph continues to return to Babel. We are not really discussing it anymore and I feel as though we’re beating a dead horse. We’ve all wrote about three seperate entries already on Babel, trying to ad more and more to the discussion. Its come to the point where I feel as though we are just repeating the same things over and over again. Babel is a movie about different people, their ideas and how they’re lives are affected by eachothers actions, just like how all of our ideas, though from different heads are all connected through this medium, Wiki, along with countless other parrallels that we have already discussed in the past. The film relates with what Steph wrote in Serendipity because she is trying tie all of our classes together into one big melting pot of ideas and discussion.

What other classess can you pick apart a blogging conversation? Not many. Ok so this whole thing was about students in freshmen English commenting on critiquing of papers through the internet. Some say they like it, others say they don’t. The main theme in almost everyone’s blog was that they know they can do a better job at critiquing other peoples’ papers. Steph sets up the conversation with talking about how all of her courses this semester are intertwined through the Wiki.

Most students seemed apprehensive about having their work looked at by people they don’t know. By doing this, Steph is tapping into the potential that is the internet. Steph believes this plan will work because we are all in an academic environment, trying to improve our writing to get a better grade. By using blogs to read and comment, animosity is kept up, as yep0628 commented, “Anonymity and publicity are two BIG differences.” Th fear of thinking your being too cruel or maybe to kind to someones paper is alleviated by using blogs.

I think the blogs are a great idea, once I was able to get past the techy part of blogging. Allowing critique on your work through a controlled internet classroom environment is a new idea in our generation that could prove to be extremely beneficial.

The similarities between the movie “Babel” and the class are not entirely clear yet but I can make a few guesses. The movie at this point is about 5 different people from all over the world who apparently have no connection with eachother. The only connection seen is the one between the Morrocan boy and the married American couple. I believe the connection between the class and the movie though lies in the way that we are all connected in one way or another, and that although we all speak different languages we all, at the same time, feel the same feelings and in that way we are all connected. Because we are all connected in some way, writing can bridge any language barrier because writing stands the test of time and can be translated into any language.
